How to Decorate Your Home for the Holidays Without Hurting a Sale

The holidays are a perfect time to showcase the warmth and character of your home to prospective buyers. But are you afraid your traditional holiday decorations may have some buyers looking the other way? Here are a few tips on how to keep the festive cheer in your home without hurting a sale.

Choose appropriate sized holiday decorations

Your goal is to be festive while honoring the value of your home. Ask yourself whether the piece helps positively showcase the charm of the room, or does it’s large size pose a distraction from the best features? Perhaps the piece can find a new place in the home, or display a smaller portion of it on a table. Also, take to mind the size of your tree. Large trees and decorations can make a room look smaller.

Consider your lighting

Be sure your holiday decor doesn’t block any natural light from windows and doors. Although this is the ideal place to display our beautiful tree or festive figurines to the world, try placing it far enough away that the natural light still flows in. Reducing natural light can minimize the value of the room.

Coordinate with the colors of the room

If your favorite holiday decorations clash with the colors of your room, you might want to think twice about using those pieces. Metallics, as well as gold, silver or copper add a little festive flair and pair well with almost any color scheme. White is also a great neutral accent color to use for the holidays.

Keep sounds and movements to a minimum

Your favorite singing and dancing figurines can be a distraction for potential buyers. If you must have them out, be sure they are turned off during showings.

Decorate to showcase your home’s architectural features

You have the opportunity to highlight your home’s most attractive architectural features while decorating for the holidays; i.e., a beautiful garland wrapped around the staircase or adding a strand of lights hidden in some greenery around your fireplace. On the other hand, be sure not to cover up any valuable structural details such as crown molding or beautiful wood flooring.

Add curb appeal with exterior holiday decorations

Wreaths, thoughtfully lighted shrubs and the occasional ribbon on a mailbox are great ways to add curb appeal and pleasantly welcome potential buyers during the holiday season. Try to refrain from using any blinking lights, as they can become very distracting.

Bottom line, as a home seller, it might be worth your time to make a few decorating adjustments during the holidays to make your home more attractive to potential buyers.
